Sex Perpetrator Used "My LOL" Dating Site
to exploit what he believed to be a 13 yr old girl.
Kody Kelso, 31 from Springfield Missouri was sentenced to mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison without parole for one count of sexual exploitation of a child to produce child pornography and one count of using the internet and cell phone to coerce and entice a child under the age of 14 to engage in illicit sexual activity. The case started with Kelso communicating with an UK undercover officer who pretended to be a 13 yr old girl online using the My LOL dating app.
Most important in this case study is for parents to be aware of the apps that perpetrators use. In this case, Kelso met the purported teen on the number one dating site for teens "My LOL". This broadcast has been created to educate parents, counselors, social workers and law enforcement about how this app works. While millions of teens use this dating app safely, the app is easily used by perpetrators to hook up with naive young people and lure them into an illicit relationship. The app uses geo algorithms to give priority to featuring dating users that live closest to the user. While many users interact appropriately there are also many posts and photos that are sexual in nature, vulgar and not suitable for teens .
