Case Analysis: SEX TRAFFICKING OF MINORS

SENTENCE GIVEN TO MAN FOR SEX TRAFFICKING OF GIRL HE MET ONLINE

This is a local case of a 42 year old man who met a 15-year-old girl online. She initially lied about her age but he acknowledged that he knew she was a minor and liked that. She borrowed a friends phone and later arranged to meet up with him twice, taking her from the Inland Empire (California) to Santa Barbara. He secured a hotel room and had sex with the minor and agreed to pay the minor $600 for the sex.

There is much to learn by understanding this case. Any time a minor in the State of California is engaged in commercial sex, even if it is willingly, it is a case of sex trafficking.

Another important take away from this case is how the family and family friend handled it. Mistakes were made but in the end the evidence was preserved. This Insider Alert shares how to handle it if you believe a minor is being exploited (either because they have been groomed and coerced or if they are a victim of sextortion or social media exploitation).
